Saving Your Business From Disaster

OK, some people would say this is a negative headline. “My sales are going down, but it’s not disaster yet.”

But that’s the point, isn’t it? We don’t want you to be in that “disaster” category. You need to stop the slide downwards so you never experience that “disaster” moment.

You probably have people saying to you: “you should try this, you should try that”. And you try it. But it doesn’t work.

“Oh”, you think, “bad advice!”

Yet what I have found in business and marketing is that the advice is often good, but executed poorly.

For one client, I suggested handing out leaflets and coupons to people walking past their establishment. Their response was: “tried it, didn’t work”.

And when they showed me the leaflet they used, I understood why. There was no offer, just a statement of prices. The full, normal price list. No specials, nothing that enticed people walking past to go inside.

It has been proven time and time again that handing out leaflets can work. But they didn’t make it work for them.

So what makes the difference between a successful promotion and a disaster?

It’s all about the execution. In that business, the owner made a simple mistake. He didn’t sit down and think about what would be exciting for people walking past. What he could offer that would make them interrupt their busy day to go inside and look at his products and services.

Many other business owners have similar disasters to recount. Spent money on advertising that didn’t work – or that brought in the wrong types of customers. Spent time and effort writing letters, producing brochures, with no payback. Zilch. Nada.

Disaster, if you don’t have the time or money to afford to fail.

But here’s the thing – how many years did you spend at school, learning the basics? Do you really expect to get it right on your first try? Or even the second try?

It will take time, and effort, and repeated trials before you’ll get it right.

There is a way to get a positive result, quickly. It’s the same way you get your car repaired when something goes wrong – you use an expert who knows how to repair your car.

If you want to learn yoga – you go to a yoga instructor.

Or if you want to learn how to ski properly, you’ll go to a skiing instructor who will show you how!

So it follows, if you want to understand how to market your business and make a profit out of it, you need to go to a marketing expert.

Now, you have some options here. You can go on the Internet and do a lot of home study, spending lots of money buying information, and try it out until you get it right.

Of course, you’ll have to make sure you get the right advice. There are lots of information products out there that have half-baked information, and you’ll end up scrambling around trying one thing after another.

Or, you can try to find out who the real experts are; those that provide enough information for you to create a strategy for your business.

This all takes time, of course. In fact, it can take years of studying and reading before you get really, really good at it. Especially the strategic part – anyone can learn quickly how to write a single brochure fairly quickly, but how you use the brochure strategically to build and strengthen your business takes a lot longer.

In this economic climate, you probably won’t have time to do all of this if you want to prevent a disaster in your company.

So what would be a better option for you?

Speak to an expert!

Take the time to talk to someone who knows how to do marketing for a small company, like yours. Someone who understands what it is to run the business and have all the responsibilities that you have.

Someone who has already helped other businesses overcome their problems, and therefore can help you.

And stop listening to well-meaning people who don’t have the skills and knowledge that you need.
